Teeth cleaning may be an apprehensive procedure for many. It is understood that the procedure does make you feel uneasy with all the noise and the prodding, but understanding what happens during the procedure might help ease the apprehension.
The teeth cleaning procedure starts with a physical examination of your whole mouth. As your dentist, we will check your teeth and gums for inflammation and other signs of concern before beginning the actual cleaning process. This will include: – Oral cancer examination – Checking biting, chewing and swallowing pattern – Teeth decay examination – Examination of the gums
Once it is confirmed that there are no signs of worry, we will proceed with the removal of plaque and tartar. Regular brushing and flossing stop the plaque from building up. Plaque that builds up, hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist. To many, this step is the least favorite part of the teeth cleaning process, as there will be a lot of scraping depending on the tartar build-up.
Once the tartar is removed with a scalar, we use a high-powered electric brush to brush your teeth and remove any remaining tartar. We make use of a toothpaste with a gritty consistency that will gently scrub your teeth. This procedure can be done twice a year.
Regular flossing at home does have a positive influence on your teeth, but when we do the flossing during your cleaning procedure, we can get deeper between your teeth, which helps us locate potential trouble spots. It also helps remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste from the cleaning process.
Rinsing helps get rid of the left-over debris. Most times, rinsing is done using a rinse containing liquid fluoride.
Fluoride treatment is the last step in the teeth cleaning process. It helps keep your teeth protected from cavities and other minor dental problems for several months. Fluoride gel or paste is applied to a mouthpiece that is fitted to your mouth and kept for a minute, or fluoride varnish may be painted to your teeth using a small brush which hardens when it comes in contact with saliva.
We, at Smooth Dental Group, suggest that you get your teeth cleaned twice a year. We also provide other procedures such as teeth polishing, adjustment of dentures, sealant for children, among others, based on the health of your teeth. During the procedure, if our expert dentist finds anything of concern, then you will be asked for other dental exams. We consider teeth cleaning the best procedure to keep optimum dental health.
